Mor Naaman, Cornell Tech "It's The Signals, Stupid: Better Approaches For Online Trustworthiness" Social content ranking algorithms are doomed. It has always been hard to reliably assess and rank the content posted online, and it is becoming even harder with Generative AI. The core challenge is that we do not have the right signals to assess and rank content, and no algorithm can be effective unless this reality improves. My talk will highlight the types of signals we are missing, and propose a framework to think about signals, in particular with respect to trustworthiness, that could enable better online behavior, algorithmic ranking, and user evaluation of content. Mor Naaman is the Don and Mibs Follett professor of Information Science at Cornell Tech where he currently serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. Mor leads a research group that studies our information ecosystem and its challenges, with a special focus on AI-mediated communication and its impact on society. Before Cornell, Mor was on the faculty at Rutgers SC&I, led a research team at Yahoo! Research Berkeley, received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford’s InfoLab, and played professional basketball for Hapoel Tel Aviv.
