Himabindu Lakkaraju is an Assistant Professor at Harvard University, holding appointments in both the Business School and the Department of Computer Science. Her academic journey led her to a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University, where she honed her expertise in the field. Dr. Lakkaraju's research is situated in the realm of trustworthy machine learning, with a specific focus on enhancing the interpretability, fairness, robustness, and reasoning capabilities of various machine learning models, including large pre-trained models and language models. Her work delves into fundamental questions concerning human and algorithmic decision-making, aiming to create fair, resilient, and interpretable models that can support human decision processes and withstand adversarial attacks. She also explores methods for training and evaluating models in the presence of missing counterfactuals and for detecting and rectifying biases in both human decisions and algorithmic predictions. Dr. Lakkaraju leads the AI4LIFE research group at Harvard and has recently co-founded the Trustworthy ML Initiative (TrustML) to facilitate access to trustworthy machine learning and foster collaboration among researchers and practitioners in the field.
